To clarify, you should use a code snippet then insert it into each site page header. With Google Analytics, you can track a lot of useful information. There are 5 categories:

Realtime: It displays all the activities happening on your site at the time you are checking the report.

Audience: It describes a group of visitors who have similar actions on demographics and behavior.

Acquisition: To identify how your visitors find your website, from organic search or from direct URL, from website referrals or social networks, and from others.

Behavior: It reports on individual pages and gives data of pageviews, data of unique pageviews, the estimated average time on each page, the data of bounce rate, plus, the percentage of exit.

Conversions: Are activities that are completed by users, these conversions contribute to your business success. There are goals, E-commerce, and Multi-channel funnels attribution.

Below is some examples that you can see while using Google Analytics:

– How many active users are on your site at the time you check

– The total users visit your site over time

– You can check your visitor’s genders, languages, ages, and locations

– How your visitors/ readers arrive at your website, for example, from organic search or social networks

– Which page visitors are using and how much time they are speeding on that page

– Track the bounce rate, click-through, and conversion rates

Those examples are the highlight data you should notify. However, there is still much information on your Google Analytics dashboard you can check to improve your site and increase your business. Overall, it’s important to have a WordPress Google Analytics in your site.

Why is Google Analytics Important to Your WordPress Site?

Google Analytics can bring a lot of benefits to any kind of site you are using. Let’s check out the most value areas if your site has WordPress Google Analytics:

Content marketing plan: You can know which post, which page, which content, or which product that your visitors usually visit. So you can create more content to increase the pageviews and traffic.

Inbound marketing: Google Analytics can provide where the traffic from so you can determine your marketing strategies and focus on how to increase more results

Audience segmentation: To increase more conversions, you should deeply understand your audience. A good way when using Google Analytics is to build some subgroups for intended marketing

UX auditing: Google Analytics helps to display user behavior. Then you can know the issues with your navigation or website layout design. Plus, you can know which poor contents and which high bounce rate pages are to improve them.

In particular, for eCommerce websites, you can track your sales as well as your revenue through conversion reports.

Together with those useful features of Google Analytics, it’s more valuable if you know how to apply your understanding from it to your site. So why don’t you install Google Analytics on WordPress site?

Four Useful Ways to Add Google Analytics to WordPress

In this part, we are going to introduce you to 4 possible methods you can pick to add Google Analytics to WordPress site.

Firstly, you should create an account in Google Analytics in case you don’t have it. It’s easy to sign up like other platforms in a few steps. Now is the time to explore the details of 4 methods.

Use a WordPress Google Analytics Plugin

Using a WordPress Google Analytics plugin is the easiest or simplest way to have this platform on your site. In particular, it does not require any code to install and set up. There are some famous plugins like Site Kid by Google or GA Google Analytics that you can download freely on WordPress.org.

GA Google Analytics

ga google analytics

In this article, we will guide you how to add Google Analytics to WordPress with GA Google Analytics plugin. It is a free, fast, and famous plugin with over 600 thousand active installs on the official WordPress site. Plus, the plugin has dozens of powerful features like tracking code customizable, Gutenberg block editor compatible, including tracking code on all web pages, etc.

Firstly, you “Download” GA Google Analytics on WordPress.org then “Add New” plugin in WordPress dashboard admin. Then you click on the “Install” button then ” Active” button to have this plugin on your website. The next step is adding your Google Analytics tracking ID in its settings.

Now you need to open your Google Analytics website with your account and click “Admin” right on the sidebar.

Then click at “Property” -> choose “Tracking info” -> select “Tracking code

You can choose to place the tracking code on the header vs footer, enable/ disable tracking of admin-level users, disable/ enable page tracking in the Admin Area, etc.

Once you have done with your settings then click on the “Save Changes” button. That’s all, now your WordPress website has a Google Analytics plugin.

Manually Connect Google Analytics and WordPress with Code

Here is the second way to have WordPress Google Analytics in your site. Thanks to  functions.php file, you can use it to add that Google Analytics tracking code into your WP theme.

Moreover, this method requires you to use a child theme to avoid any error while updating your WP theme. Plus, making a backup is a good way if you are going to make changes.

Now you need to activate your stunning child theme then find Google Tracking code to paste right ahead the closing place </head> tag in the Theme Header, which is at the (header.php) part.

Similar to the first method, you should access your Google Analytics website by your account, click “Admin” -> select “Property” -> select “Tracking Info” -> and choose the “Tracking Code“. At this step, you copy the script in “Global Site Tag” (you can refer to the picture below).

google site tag code

Then you go back to your WordPress admin panel site, click “Appearance” -> select “Theme Editor“. If you can not see header.php, you can hover to “Theme Files” then click on the parent theme name.

You will see the header.php and now paste the script right before the </head> tag in the editing page.

After that, click “Update File” to complete. Finally, your site has Google Analytics Code WordPress.

Integrate Google Analytics and WordPress with Google Tag Manager

The third method to have Google Analytics into WordPress is using the famous platform – Google Tag Manager. If your website not only analyze but also incorporates scripts for a lot of purposes, this method can bring useful help.

Some of you might wonder what a Google Tag Manager is? It is actually a tag management system. Plus, it is a perfect solution to update tags and code snippets  in your WordPress website or on mobile apps with ease. You don’t need to edit the side code in your WordPress dashboard, you just need to update the scripts from its user interface. This way helps to reduce any issues while configuring tags.

So how to setup Google Analytics on WordPress? The simplest way is using Google Tag Manager (GTM) WordPress plugin, which you can download easily and freely on WordPress.org. This GTM comes with over 500 thousand active installs and hundred stars. Plus, GTM mainly focuses on managing & deploying analytics and marketing tags. Also, it offers code snippets and supports multiple containers too.

After downloading this Google Tag Manager tool, you can go to your WordPress admin dashboard panel -> hover to “Plugins” on the sidebar -> click “Add New” -> then “Install” and “Active“. Now you go to Google Tag Manager website, sign up an account then start creating your container.

Once you complete the first container, on Google Tag Manager dashboard, you click “Admin” and look for a container ID which starts with the big letters GTM and next is numbers then copy it.

Now you go back to your WordPress admin panel dashboard, click on “Settings” -> Select “Google Tag Manager” and you can see the plugin’s settings page. On “General” tap -> Paste “Google Tag Manager ID” and set up “Container code placement“.

Remember to click “Save Changes” and now you have completed setting up Google Analytics on WordPress site.

Syncing Google Analytics Locally for Performance Reasons

The 4th  way to have WordPress Google Analytics site is syncing the Analytics script locally in your own server.

If you receive the request about reducing your external HTTP, you now do not need to worry since this syncing Google Analytics can help you easily and quickly. Plus, you can totally control the file caching so it’s easy to use your own server’s caching headers. These are just some benefits if you use this method in WordPress and Google Analytics.

Moreover, if you are using Google PageSpeed Insights, you probably have seen a notification error “Serve static assets with an efficient cache policy”. This is a warning when you use Google Analytics script.

pagespeed insights analytics

It helps you know and improve your site performance. And you can see the cache time is about 2 hours on Google Analytics warning. It’s easy to understand since Google needs to check things on its end, so it requires all users who have the access to the changes as quick as possible. Overall, changing the cache time is the way to improve your site performance, thanks to Google Analytics script hosting on your own server.

Syncing Google Analytics Locally with the Complete Analytics Optimization Suite

To begin, you should download the CAOS – Host Google Analytics Locally plugin on WordPress.org. It’s a free and famous plugin by Daan from FFW.Press with over 20 thousands active installs. Moreover, CAOS has various amazing features, like host analytic.js (Google Analytics JavaScript file) or gtag.js locally, minimal Analytic ready, Google Analytics V4 API support, anonymize the IP address of visitors, etc.

Like the above steps, you can download and activate the CAOS plugin easily on your WordPress admin panel.

caos

Another note that, you need to deactivate other analytics plugins if you installed before to use CAOS. Next, on your WordPress admin panel, click on the “Settings” on sidebar -> select “Optimize Analytics” and “Basic Settings” tap -> Paste your “Google Analytics Tracking ID” -> Choose “Footer” option in “Position of tracking-code” -> Then “Save Changes“.

caos host google analytics locally settings

Furthermore, this CAOS plugin helps to add necessary code for Google Analytics to your WP site. After that, CAOS plugin will download and save the analytics.js file to your own server. Beside, it will keep on updating via a scheduled script in wp_con(). Always take note that this plugin doesn’t work with any other Google Analytics plugins.

Syncing Google Analytics Locally With Perfmatters

Another way of syncing the Google Analytics locally is using the Permatters plugin. It’s one of the lightweight performance and famous plugins you should try. However, Perfmatters is not a free plugin, it’s a premium plugin. Apart from its powerful features such as CDN rewrite, script manager, database optimization, etc, it has a feature to sync Google Analytics locally. Similarly, you just copy and paste the Analytics tracking ID then set “Tracking Code Position” is “Footer” with “Script Type” is analytic.js (Default).

Final Thoughts

Google Analytics is the most powerful tool you should use to analyze your visitor’s activity. Even if it is not the only one tool available, it’s the perfect solution. It helps you have data to gain more audience as well as brand. Hopefully, you can apply those instructions above and add successfully the WordPress Google Analytics website.

Google’s Page Title Update is Dynamic and Reactive to Changes

Google’s new system for generating web page titles is dynamic and will respond to changes to HTML tags.

As more new information comes out about Google’s update to generating web page titles, we learn it’s dynamic and will react to on-site changes. That means the replacement text Google chooses for page titles is not set in stone.

When you modify a page’s HTML title tag, Google will take the updated text into consideration and react accordingly. This is stated by Google’s Danny Sullivan on Twitter in response to a question from Lily Ray.

Ray asks how often Google will refresh its selected title for a page, noting that it’s common for news outlets to modify titles after publishing.

Sullivan says he believes Google’s new title tag system is dynamic. Further, he reveals refinements have already been made and more are on the way. “I’ll have to check by I believe it’s all fairly dynamic and reactively to changes. I’ll also reiterate what we said in the post. We’ve already made some refinements and plan more.”

Google Wants Feedback on Page Title Update
Mueller started a tread in the Search Console Help forums where you can share your experience with this update and how it’s affecting your site.

He asks that you be as detailed as possible in your submission. Include the URL of the page, the title shown, the device type used, and any feedback you have on that title. You can even include a screenshot if you wish.

At the time of this writing there are only two replies to the thread, so not a lot of feedback so far. Though it appears Google has some issues to work out.

Instagram rolls out sponsored product listings for all merchants

After testing over the last few weeks, Instagram is now rolling out its new feature. This new feature is promoting the product listings option in the form of a Shop tab. It will help all the merchants in this app.

Brands with their product listing can now promote them using the Shop tab. They will need to use this feature with a “sponsored’ disclaimer marking for the paid posts.

Instagram explained that after successful research, they are now launching ads on the Instagram Shop tab. It will make it easier for people to discover the shop from the brand when they are browsing. These ads will appear in the form of a turtle on the Instagram Shop tab home page.

Instagram has not yet said what ‘successful’ means in this context. But it seems like the promoted listings have not yet had any negative impact on user engagement. It could be helping in driving results for early brands.

Clicking on the sponsor product will take users through a thorough journey on the product details page. They will be able to learn more about that particular item from that place. The details page will also highlight additional products from that particular brand.

WordPress Classic Editor Support Extended for at Least Another Year

Last week, I reached out to several members of the core WordPress committers to see if we could get an official word on whether Classic Editor support would continue beyond the mere months it seemingly had left to live. I received a semi-official answer but was asked to hold off on publishing for a more detailed and nuanced response.

Earlier today, WordPress executive director Josepha Haden Chomposy announced the official decision. It was just as expected. The WordPress project would continue supporting the Classic Editor plugin for a while longer.

“At the time, we promised to support the plugin through 2021 and adjust if needed as the deadline got closer,” she wrote. “After discussing this with Matt [Mullenweg], it’s clear that continuing to support the plugin through 2022 is the right call for the project as well as the community.”

Weekly News: Gallery Block Refactor Expected To Land in WordPress 5.9

Google Redesigns ‘How Search Works’ Website

Google’s new page on search features allows you to consume all the content seamlessly by scrolling down the page. No clicking necessary.

In fairness, while I couldn’t find any new information on the updated site,  what was already there was plenty sufficient

After writing a whole post announcing the redesign, Google’s Danny Sullivan got the news out on Twitter as well which made this feel like a major change.

If you looked at the site thinking, “what’s new?” The answer is: not a lot!

This is the kind of update that probably would have gone unnoticed had Google not said anything about it.

You can judge for yourself by perusing the updates to the How Search Works site.

Gutenberg 11.3 Introduces Dimensions Panel, Adds Button Padding Support, and Speeds Up the Inserter

Gutenberg 11.3 landed in the WordPress plugin directory. The latest update introduces a new dimensions panel for toggling spacing-related block options. The Button block now supports the padding control, and the Post Featured Image block has new width and height settings.

One of the release’s highlights was a speed improvement for both opening and searching within the inserter. The opening time dropped over 200 ms, from 370.35 ms to 137.28 ms. Search speed went from 190.37 ms to 67.24 ms.

The latest release includes a simplified color picker library. Rich previews for links, a feature introduced in Gutenberg 10.9 for external URLs, now works with internal site links.

Theme authors should enjoy the reduced specificity of the reset and classic editor stylesheets. Such changes always make it a little easier for theme authors to match editor and front-end styling.

An Update on the Classic Editor Plugin

Before the release of WordPress 5.0 in 2018, the Classic Editor plugin was published to help ease the transition to the new block editor. At the time, we promised to support the plugin through 2021 and adjust if needed as the deadline got closer. After discussing this with Matt, it’s clear that continuing to support the plugin through 2022 is the right call for the project as well as the community.

Still, if you’ve been putting off using the block editor, this is an excellent time to give it another shot. Since it first appeared in 2018, hundreds of WordPress contributors have made a lot of updates based on user feedback. You will be pleasantly surprised at how far it’s come!

Big thanks to everyone who has been working on WordPress, Gutenberg, and the Classic Editor plugin. And thank you to every WordPress user and tester who has provided the feedback we need to make the software even better.

Last week, a GitHub pull request I had been watching since October 2020 on the Gutenberg repository was finally merged into the codebase. It changes the structure of the WordPress Gallery block to be a container for nested Image blocks. The new format is expected to land in WordPress 5.9.

For those who want to begin testing it early, it should ship with Gutenberg 11.4 next week. However, you can grab the nightly test version from Gutenberg Times to see it in action now. To use the new Gallery format, you must enable it from the Gutenberg > Experiments admin screen.

“If you have ever added a custom link to an image block and then tried to do the same on a Gallery image, you will understand the frustration and confusion of not having consistency between different types of image blocks,” wrote Glenn Davies in the refactor announcement post. “This inconsistency is because the core Gallery block stores the details of the included images as nested <img> elements within the block content. Therefore, the images within a gallery look and behave different from images within an individual image block.”

At the surface level, the Gallery block refactor does not change much for many users. They will still add images to galleries as they have for years. However, for more advanced usage, it opens a world of possibilities.

One oft-requested feature is the ability to add links to individual images in galleries. In the past, users could only link to attachment pages or the media file itself. Both options applied to all images. With the most recent change, users can modify each Image block, including customizing its link.

You can also jump directly to the section most relevant to your specific interest,” said Pablo Paniagua, director of product management, in the announcement.

YouTube has previously had short autoplay with captions when desktop users move their mouse over a video to help them know what they’re about to watch. This option allows you to find exactly what you’re looking for (or find a video that does cover the topic you want to learn about). The quick auto-play will also be available on mobile upon scroll.

Facebook’s First-Ever Report On Most Viewed Content

Facebook published its first-ever report on the most widely viewed content in users’ news feeds.

Facebook published a report that offers a first-ever look at what content gets the most views in people’s news feeds.

The report published today is the first in a series of reports. It focuses on which domains, links, pages, and posts get the most views in the US.

Facebook’s Widely Viewed Content Report

Facebook says this first quarterly report aims to provide clarity around what people see in their news feed.

Here are some general takeaways:

  • The content that’s seen by the most people isn’t necessarily the content that also gets the most engagement.
  • 57% of posts that people see is from their family and friends.
  • Fewer than 13% of content views were on posts with links.
  • Most viewed news domains account for 0.31% of all content views. Of those domains, mainstream media dominate by views.
  • Of posts with links, around a quarter of the most viewed domains were news publishers.

“It depends” doesn’t have to be the answer if you ask the right questions; Thursday’s daily brief

After moderating so many Overtime Q&A sessions for SMX, I’ve noticed that many professionals formulate their questions something like this: relevant background information, goal, “What should I do?”

Numerous reports of images not loading in Google’s Top stories carousel began surfacing on Twitter yesterday morning. We were able to replicate the issue (shown above) and the carousel shows either blank or blurred featured images, but some of the reports we’ve seen include screenshots of the carousel in which one or two of the images did successfully load. Google has confirmed that it’s a bug and is working on a fix but has not provided a timeline. We’ll continue to provide updates as they come in.

Four ways to improve page speed and master Core Web Vitals

Google’s latest major update to its search algorithm focuses greatly on the user experience through a new set of ranking factors metrics, called Core Web Vitals. Early results from Core Web Vital audits reveal that the average website performs below these new standards. Searchmetrics’ research revealed that, on average, sites could reduce page load time by nearly one second by removing unused JavaScript.

This provides an amazing opportunity to outperform other websites by boosting your own page rankings.

Here is everything you need to know about Core Web Vitals plus four simple steps to improve your metrics.

What are the Core Web Vitals metrics?

Core Web Vitals are an extension of Google’s page experience signals that include mobile-friendliness and HTTPS. The three Core Web Vitals metrics measure loading performance, interactivity, and visual stability, which Google views as providing an accurate depiction of a real-world, user experience.

How to check your page speed insights

There are many online tools that check your page ranking score, including PageSpeed Insights, Chrome User Experience Report, Lighthouse Audit, and Search Console. These sites measure page speed in various elements and display the results using a traffic light system. PageSpeed Insights provides a breakdown of the results and highlights areas of improvement.

How to craft a winning Search Engine Land Awards entry: Past judges share their advice

Since its inception in 2015, the Search Engine Land Awards has recognized exceptional marketers on an annual basis — showcasing their outstanding work, providing well-earned exposure in coverage and interviews, and bestowing upon them the highest honor in search.

But the road between deciding to begin an application and winning the award can be a long one. Although this year’s submission process has been significantly streamlined — it’s never been faster or easier to apply to the Search Engine Land Awards — there’s still a story that has to be told. And while the way in which you tell that story is entirely up to you, we thought we’d look back on some advice from past judges about what really wows them, what they would love to see more of, and what areas are best avoided...

Google’s tool to report indexing bugs is now available in the U.S.

The tool provides a way for SEOs to escalate their issues with Google Search.

Google’s reporting tool for indexing bugs is now available to all signed-in Search Console users worldwide (although it can only process reports filed in English), the company announced on Monday. The tool, which was first announced as a pilot program back in April, can be accessed at the bottom of the URL inspection help document and indexing coverage report document.

Indexing issues in Google Search are fairly common. In fact, we’ve reported numerous confirmed indexing issues with Google over the years. Now that this tool is out of the pilot program, SEOs and site owners in the U.S. have a way to escalate these indexing issues, which should help them get closer to resolving them

Google Ad’s New Conversion Value Rules: What They Are & How to Use Them

What Are Conversion Value Rules?

Conversion value rules allow advertisers to tell Google Ads what factors are most important to them by applying rules.

The rules allow advertisers to indicate instances when a conversion is worth more or less than the average conversion, based upon various characteristics of the auction. Having this control will also allow advertisers and smart-bidding algorithms better data to bid and budget more effectively.

How To Use Conversion Value Rules?

Rules are applied at the time of auction-based upon the criteria provided.

No matter how many rules are set up, only one rule can be applied to a given conversion. If a customer meets the conditions for multiple value rules, Google decides which one to use based upon the following logic:

  • For the location rule, the most precise location rule is applied.
  • For audiences, Google will follow the hierarchy below. If there is a tie, Google will choose a rule using the “multiply” logic over the “add” rule. If a tie remains, Google will choose the highest adjustment.
  • This is the hierarchy used for audience application, meaning that customer match rules trump all other audience rules in situations where they overlap and so on down the line:
    • Customer Match
    • Remarketing & Similar Audiences,
    • Affinity & In-Market audiences
    • Detailed Demographics

Advertisers can adjust conversion values in Smart Bidding in the coming weeks

“You can adjust conversion values based on characteristics like location, device, and audience. By applying a rule to these characteristics, you can adjust conversion values to align more closely with your business outcomes,” said Stephen Chang, Product Manager, Google Ads in an announcement.

This added feature means that businesses can use their inherent knowledge of what’s working in their industry to improve their conversion rates in Google Ads. For example, if advertisers know certain audiences or people in certain locations are most likely to convert, they can set a rule to multiply the conversion value for the chosen group by two.

Facebook’s First-Ever Report On Most Viewed Content

Facebook published a report which offers a first-ever look at what content gets the most views in peoples’ news feeds. It focuses on which domains, links, pages, and posts get the most views in the US.

A view is counted when content appears on a user’s screen for any length of time. A user does not have to engage with the content to ‘view’ it.

Industry folks argue this report falls short of what it is, but there’s at least some interesting insights. We’ll look at those arguments at the end. First, let’s look at the data.

Most viewed domains:

Facebook’s full report contains a list of the top 20 domains by content views. In the interest of brevity, here’s a look at the top five.

  • youtube.com (181.3M views)
  • amazon.com (134.6M views)
  • youtube.com (181.3M views)
  • unicef.org (134.4M views)
  • gofundme.com (124.8M views)
  • twitter.com (116.1M views)

YouTube adds video chapter previews, auto-translates captions in new search functions

To make searching for videos on YouTube easier, the company announced two new updates on Tuesday to the way its on-site search function operates.

Timestamp previews and auto-play snippets added to mobile. “These time-stamped images detail the different topics covered in videos and let you better evaluate the video you’re about to watch. You can also jump directly to the section most relevant to your specific interest,” said Pablo Paniagua, director of product management, in the announcement.

YouTube has previously had a short autoplay with captions when desktop users move their mouse over a video to help them know what they’re about to watch. This option allows you to find exactly what you’re looking for (or find a video that does cover the topic you want to learn about). The quick auto-play will also be available on mobile upon scroll.

Auto-translated captions in different languages. “We’re starting to show search results from other languages with automatically translated captions, titles and descriptions when relevant content in the local language isn’t available,” explained Paniagua. This means that language may no longer be a barrier, especially for educational or how-to content on YouTube. The plan to supplement captions will start with English language videos and roll out to other languages.

Google is working on rewriting Title Tags in SERPs

Google is now rewriting its title tags for the limited amount of pages in its search results. It often replaces the text with the H1 tag of the page. We are familiar with the fact that Google adjusts the titles in SERPs. It performs some small tweaks like appending the name of a business to the end. But now Google is working on overriding the titles with different texts.

SEOs have recently started taking note of this form on August 16. This is evident from the tweets which are mentioning about the “massive” title rewriting on Google.

Google Top Stories not loading images: Here’s what is happening

Google is apparently facing a bug with its top stories carousel, which is not loading all the images for the listed articles. Multiple reports have cropped up on Twitter with people complaining about the issue. The issue is causing solid colour windows to appear instead of the images when searching for specific keywords like “News”, “Redmi Note” and more.

We tried testing the issue and it replicated for us on many keywords. While some of the carousels seem to have been fixed, like for the keyword “covid booster shot” it could simply be that the issue will show up for different keywords for everybody.

People are not yet much familiar with this scale of title rewriting. But it is now widespread enough for the multiple SEOs who have encountered it already. Evidence is suggesting that Google is pulling texts from the H1 Tags for the rewrites. Lily Ray notes that she has seen Google replacing the title of the page with anchor text from an internal link.
